School/Program: Fine Arts and Design. Institution Profile. The Umeå University - Academy of Fine Arts had humble beginnings, starting out in an old factory in Umeå, Sweden. Founded in 1987, the academy now has a series of workshops, all equipped to deal with various aspects of the fine arts, from woodwork to graphic design.

Umea Academy of Fine Arts is part of the Umeå Arts Campus at Umeå University, together with the Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå Institute of Design, Bildmuseet and HumlabX. The Academy offers three degrees in Fine Arts: a Bachelor Program and a Master Program and a PhD program on artistic grounds. We also offer summer courses.

Challenged to devise methods of experimentation and a significant understanding of historical and contemporary context, students develop an informed artistic practice, specific to their intentions and sensibilities. The Academy of Fine Arts at Umeå University is beautifully located on the riverside in the centre of Umeå. The school started in 1987 in a renovated building, a former factory. The Master's programme at Umeå Academy of Fine Arts is a two-year and internationally oriented programme that follows a Bachelor's degree. During the same period as the MA exhibition runs at Bildmuseet, the BA students will exhibit at Västerbottens museum.
